Grounds for Change

The coffee market is a large and global industry, with coffee being one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. As a result of market competition, price volatility, and climatic conditions, small farmers face a great deal of difficulty.

There has been significant marginalization of the coffee farming sector. The farmers have been squeezed down with lower margins, and they are one of the groups that are not making much money. 

Our very own CEO, Jacques E. Shalo, was born and raised on a coffee farm in Cameroon, and he saw firsthand the existing inequities and how deeply the farmers’ lives were impacted. A large part of this can be attributed to the value chain, from the farmers to the traders to the shippers to the roasters and then to the retailers, where it is evident that roasters enjoy the lion's share of the wealth.

To resolve this issue, Shalo decided to invest in Kribi Coffee by bringing together a number of farmers from the country of Cameroon from whom we procure green coffee. We have consolidated our farmers and are sourcing green beans directly from them, as opposed to sourcing through third-party distributors and manufacturers.
